Goa to Boost School Counsellor Numbers Significantly

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced an increase in psychological counsellors in Goa schools from 96 to 175. This move aims to provide mental health support to students facing academic pressure and social anxieties. The initiative also includes 50 counsellors for colleges, contingent on student strength.

The Goa government is set to significantly increase the number of psychological counsellors in schools, jumping from 96 to 175, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Monday.

Addressing the assembly in response to a question from Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar, Sawant stated that 96 counsellors and 16 supervisors are currently in place for 198 high schools and 61 higher secondary schools for the upcoming academic year 2024-2025. Additionally, 50 counsellors are appointed for colleges.

'The number of counsellors will rise from 96 to 175 in high and higher secondary schools,' stated Sawant. 'These professionals provide essential support as students navigate academic pressures, personal struggles, and social anxieties, ensuring their emotional well-being.'

Sawant also noted that the number of college counsellors would be adjusted based on student enrollment numbers.
