ABVP Backs Left-Leaning Rival at TISS Over Student Group Ban

The ABVP, an RSS-affiliated student group, has supported its ideological rival, the Left-leaning PSF, against a ban imposed by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). The ABVP argues that the ban on the PSF undermines free speech and democratic participation, essential elements of educational institutions.

The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has unprecedentedly come out in support of its ideological rival, the Left-leaning Progressive Students Forum (PSF), after the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) banned the group, citing obstruction and defamation of the institution.

The ABVP criticized the 'abrupt and irrational' ban, warning that such actions could lead to significant unrest within student bodies and compromise the integrity of student council elections, a cornerstone of democratic processes. The TISS had taken the step on August 19, warning the PSF against organizing or participating in unauthorized events, threatening immediate intervention and consequences.

The Democratic Secular Students Forum (DSSF) also condemned the ban, stressing that campus groups are vital for ensuring diverse student perspectives and fostering critical thinking. While the DSSF opposes some actions by the PSF, it believes that banning student organizations undermines basic democratic rights.
