Students Demand Justice in Serbia's Biggest Rally Since Railway Tragedy
Thousands of students rallied in Serbia's Kragujevac to protest against government corruption following a deadly train station accident in Novi Sad. They demand justice for victims, transparency in the investigation, and more funding for education. The protests challenge President Vucic's administration amid recent resignations.
Thousands of students gathered in the Serbian city of Kragujevac on Saturday, marking the largest protest against the government following a deadly railway accident last November. The tragedy, resulting from a roof collapse at a train station in Novi Sad, claimed 15 lives and sparked nationwide outrage.
Since the incident, anti-corruption protests have gained momentum, challenging President Aleksandar Vucic's administration, which faces accusations of negligence and nepotism. Despite resignations by Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and two ministers, demonstrations continue, drawing attention to cracks in Vucic's decade-long control over Serbian politics.
The student-led movement, symbolized by a 15-hour and 15-minute city boulevard blockade, seeks justice for the disaster's victims, documents revealing the accident's details, and increased investment in education. Participants, including 22-year-old Djordje Vujovic, vow to persist until their demands are addressed.
