Embassy Alert Sparks Tension in Qatar: Citizens Advised to Shelter
The U.S. embassy in Qatar advised citizens to shelter in place, citing caution after Iran's threats. Qatar's government assured stability, urging no panic. American institutions in Doha had mixed responses, leaving residents confused. Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base, hosting U.S. troops, added importance to the advisory.
The U.S. embassy in Qatar issued an advisory for American citizens on Monday, recommending they shelter in place due to potential threats from Iran following its recent warnings. Although the embassy described the advice as precautionary, it created apprehension among residents.
Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari reassured citizens, emphasizing stability and noting no specific threats were identified. The advisory, however, amplified concerns given the presence of Al Udeid Air Base, a strategic location for U.S. Central Command.
The alert prompted varied responses from American educational institutions in Qatar. Texas A&M University ordered evacuations, Northwestern University urged leaving, and Georgetown University left attendance voluntary. The American School preemptively ceased activities, reflecting uncertainty amid the mixed guidance.
