Renowned mathematician Amartya Kumar Dutta has been appointed as the new director of the Indian Statistical Institute, as announced in an official notification. His appointment marks the return of a full-term director, the first since the expiration of Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay's term last September.

Dutta, who currently serves as a mathematics professor at the institute, was selected through a rigorous process involving a three-member search committee formed by the ISI Council, the institute's highest administrative body.

Set to assume the position officially on April 1, 2026, Dutta will lead the prestigious institute for five years or until he reaches the age of superannuation, succeeding Ayanendranath Basu, the outgoing officiating director.
