The headmaster of a state-run residential school in Odisha's Nabarangpur district faced suspension after a serious allegation of sexual harassment by a 14-year-old tribal student. The class 7 student accused the headmaster of inappropriate conduct, claiming he touched her while other students were present. Despite an initial delay, the girl's family, with assistance from a local leader, formally lodged the complaint with the police.
The District Welfare Officer mentioned that the headmaster was transferred initially to allow for an unbiased investigation. The decision to suspend him came after a committee's recommendation. The school, operated by the state's SC & ST Development, Minorities and Backwards Classes Department, is under committed scrutiny as officials vow to take necessary legal measures.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Krushna Chandra Bhattara assured that a thorough investigation would result in appropriate legal action. Reports suggest that this might not be an isolated incident, and further testimonies may surface. School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond emphasized the urgency of the investigation and the imperative for accountability.
