Scholar Michel Danino Highlights Chilling Impact on Textbook Innovation

Amidst ongoing debates over academic freedom linked to the removal of a contentious NCERT textbook chapter, academic Michel Danino has expressed concerns about the lasting impact of Supreme Court rulings on textbook writers. He believes these rulings could stifle innovation and creativity essential for educational progress.

In an interview, Danino emphasized the risks of discouraging innovation if educational reforms promised under the National Education Policy 2020 are to be realized. He highlighted the need for a transformation in how subjects are taught, with less reliance on physical textbooks, pointing to the global shift towards alternative teaching resources as an example.

Danino also noted the challenges faced by Indian teachers and schools, with limited resources hindering the ability to embrace new educational methods. Despite digital advancements, many schools, especially in rural areas, still lack basic internet access, making textbooks the primary educational resource.
