A devastating fire ravaged a dormitory at a girls' school in Kenya's Rift Valley overnight, claiming the lives of at least 15 students, according to police reports on Thursday. An unspecified number of students at Utumishi Girls' Academy Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, sustained injuries, as noted in a report obtained by Reuters from the Gilgil Police Station. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Citizen Television aired footage showing shattered window panes and walls stained with smoke. Kenya's history of school fires is extensive, with over 60 arson cases in public secondary schools documented in 2018 alone, based on government statistics. Researchers indicate that several instances were initiated by students protesting stringent discipline and substandard living conditions.

Senior police commander Masoud Mwinyi informed reporters at the scene that a team of 50 officers was conducting a search in the vicinity for students who may have fled during the inferno. 'In the shock, fear, and confusion, many fled, and it happened at night,’ Mwinyi remarked. A similar tragic incident occurred in 2024 when a fire claimed 21 young lives at a nearby primary boarding school in Nyeri County, with the cause remaining undetermined.
