Rwanda-based Chinese Embassy has donated desktop computers, laptops and printers to FAWE Girls School based in the capital city Kigali.

“We thank the government of China and the embassy of China in Rwanda for supporting education in our country, and most especially girl’s education. We are honoured to receive these education materials,” said the secondary school’s headteacher Eugenia Kairaba, who attended the handover ceremony held in the Chinese embassy. Speaking on the occasion, Chinese Ambassador Rao Hongwei spoke highly of the increasing cooperation and exchanges in all fields between China and Rwanda and stressed the importance of girls’ education in women’s empowerment.

Rao pledged that the embassy would further support educational activities in Rwanda and revealed that the embassy and the FAWE Girls School are also working together to set up a Chinese centre in the school to help students learn the Chinese language and culture. The public boarding school enrols students mainly from middle- and low-income families, and is considered as one of Rwanda’s best girls schools in terms of teaching standards and student performance.

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is a pan-African nongovernmental organization founded in 1992 by five women ministers of education to promote girls’ and women’s education in sub-Saharan Africa, as reported by Xinhua.
