Volunteers Association of Bangladesh (VAB) has taken a significant step in its pursuit of mitigating the alarmingly poor English language skills of rural students of Bangladesh. It has launched an "English Language Skills Program" and is implementing the Program in 21 rural high schools.

The Program incorporates several innovative methods of training, with the main thrust that - students need to learn English for their own interests; Students can learn only through concerted practice. Based on three years of conducting English language workshops in rural schools, with inputs of experts in the field, VAB has developed an in-house training program; trained its own personnel in the delivery of the program, and sent them to rural schools to train catalyst groups of students in each class of each rural school. The catalyst groups will in turn train the whole student body of the rural school.

VAB is planning to eventually execute the Program in 50 rural schools under its aegis.
