For all the left-handers out there, a day is marked to celebrate your uniqueness and differences.

August 13 is celebrated every year as International Left-Handers Day. The first time August 13 was observed as Left Handers Day in 1976 by the founder of Lefthanders International, Inc, Dean R. Campbell.

Left-handers contribute to seven to ten percent of the world's population. The day is marked to raise awareness about the differences faced by the people in the majority right-handers' world.

The United States of AMerica had eight left-handers Presidents until now. This includes James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.

Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga, Messi all belong to the special 10 percent category of the population.

A theory suggests that the left-handers are more masterminds and process information way more fast than the others.

IFL Science conducted a mathematical experiment and found that left-handers performed better than their counterparts. The study said: "left-handers outperformed the rest of the sample when the tasks involved difficult problem-solving, such as associating mathematical functions to a given set of data."

The study further revealed: "This pattern of results was particularly clear in male adolescents. In contrast, when the task was not so demanding, such as when doing simple arithmetic, there was no difference between left and right-handers. We also discovered that extreme right-handers – individuals who said they prefer to use their right hand for all items on the handedness test – under-performed in all the experiments compared to moderate right-handers and left-handers."

Not only the merits, left-handers have had their own demerits. In countries like India, Nepal performing any religious task from the left hand is considered as inauspicious.

Scissors, car driving, right-hand support chairs, can openers, spiral notebooks all the left-handers might have had an affair with all of these. A day marking their uniqueness is worth celebrating.
