Restored Classic 'Manthan' Shines at Star-Studded Premiere

Funded by 5 lakh farmers, 'Manthan' celebrates India's milk cooperative movement. The restoration was showcased at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

The restored version of Shyam Benegal's 1976 classic film 'Manthan' premiered to a packed house in Mumbai, with numerous cinema personalities and the film's original cast in attendance.

Benegal and cinematographer Govind Nihalani, along with stars like Naseeruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Abha Dhulia, graced the event. The event celebrated not just the film but the groundbreaking milk cooperative movement in India, led by Dr Verghese Kurien and funded by 5 lakh farmers.

Produced with an innovative model of crowdfunding back in the day, 'Manthan' heralded the success of the Amul brand. Its restored version was showcased at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The Film Heritage Foundation undertook the restoration of this cinematic gem, and it will now screen across 101 theatres in 51 cities throughout India.
