In an unexpected historical revelation, at least 27 mortar shells dating back to the 1971 Indo-Pak war were discovered in West Tripura district on Thursday, police confirmed.
The discovery occurred during excavation work at Dulal Nama's residence, where laborers stumbled upon 12 shells initially, with an additional 15 uncovered subsequently. Police noted the shells were in a state of severe disrepair, making precise identification challenging.
Villagers speculated the wartime relics might have been buried and forgotten by Mukti Bahini members, the freedom fighters instrumental in Bangladesh’s liberation. Assistant Inspector General Ananta Das acknowledged the challenge in tracing the shells' origins due to the extent of damage, emphasizing the role of arms experts for definitive identification.
