UNESCO's Director General Audrey Azoulay highlighted the 'tremendous' challenges in protecting heritage amidst the global transformation driven by the digital revolution and climate disruption. Speaking at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in New Delhi, Azoulay described India as 'an inspiration for UNESCO.'
India is hosting its first key UNESCO event from July 21 to July 31, expressing deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for welcoming the world to protect cultural and natural heritage. Azoulay praised the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for preserving over 3,600 monuments and sites, enhancing international cooperation, especially in Cambodia's Angkor Wat.
Azoulay emphasized the challenges and determination in safeguarding heritage, highlighting the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum's role in nurturing future conservationists. India's tradition of 'dharma' was underscored as essential for preserving heritage. A video titled 'Aham Bharatam' captured India's rich cultural ethos, with Azoulay recognizing India's unique reinterpretation of its heritage.
