British radical Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary has been convicted of terrorism offences, according to a statement from London's Metropolitan Police on Tuesday. Choudary, 57, was found guilty of directing the banned group al-Muhajiroun and encouraging others to support it.

Following a six-week trial at Woolwich Crown Court, Choudary was convicted of both directing and being a member of a terrorist organization. Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, stated that Choudary faces a significant sentence and will be sentenced on July 30.

Choudary's conviction, along with that of Canadian citizen Khaled Hussein, followed a joint investigation by the Metropolitan Police, MI5, and international agencies. The investigation revealed that Choudary directed al-Muhajiroun through online lectures, with Hussein's assistance in hosting and editing extremist content. Authorities believe these convictions will enhance safety across the UK.
