UNESCO Saves Lumbini from Heritage Danger List

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided not to include Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal, on the Heritage Sites in Danger list. This decision follows a similar one for Stonehenge, taken during its ongoing session in India. The WHC is addressing potential threats to these iconic sites.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee, during its ongoing session in India, decided on Thursday to keep Lumbini, Nepal—the birthplace of Lord Buddha—off the List of Heritage Sites in Danger, as per a senior UNESCO official.

This decision comes after similar considerations for Stonehenge and Associated Sites in the UK, which were also examined but not added to the danger list.

Held from July 21-31, the session in India marks the first WHC meeting hosted by the country. Key discussions highlighted the importance of global collaboration to safeguard these landmark sites from ongoing developmental pressures.
