Paris 2024 organisers issued an apology on Sunday to Catholics and other Christian groups upset by a tableau featured in the Olympic Games opening ceremony, which parodied Leonardo Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'.

The segment, intended to promote community tolerance, included drag queens, a transgender model, and a naked singer depicting the Greek god Dionysus. It drew criticism from the Catholic Church.

"Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. The opening ceremony aimed to celebrate community tolerance," stated Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps during a press conference. "We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offence we are really sorry."
