The Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha's Kendrapara district reopened for tourists on Thursday after a three-month hiatus to protect nesting saltwater crocodiles. The park had been closed from May 1 to July 31 to ensure the reptiles had a tranquil environment during their mating and nesting seasons, Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Manas Das disclosed.
Celebrated for its picturesque mangrove forest, Bhitarkanika is often referred to as a mini Amazon. A total of 114 saltwater crocodiles nested during the season this year, according to forest authorities. To enhance the tourists' experience, the forest department has recently completed a 600-meter-long wooden canopy bridge, located 15 meters above the ground.
Tourists planning to visit Bhitarkanika can make reservations through www.ecotourodisha.com. The forest department offers accommodation at forest rest houses in Dangamala, Habalikothi, and Gupti. The park attracts visitors from across India and abroad, making it a significant eco-tourism site.
