The Manipur government has debunked an audio clip, falsely attributed to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, which surfaced on social media in an attempt to disrupt peace initiatives in the ethnically conflicted state.

Police have launched an investigation to trace the origins of the clip, which contains incendiary remarks against a community.

'The government has noted that an audio recording, incorrectly claiming to be that of the Chief Minister, is circulating on social media platforms,' the state government stated.

'This fabricated audio is a malicious attempt by certain groups to incite communal violence and derail peace processes at various levels,' the statement continued.

According to the government, over 200 people have died and thousands have been displaced in ongoing violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki-Zo communities since last May.

'The Manipur Police are actively probing the matter and are committed to identifying the source of this defamatory campaign,' the statement added, pledging legal actions against the conspirators.

At this critical juncture, the restoration of peace is of utmost importance for the state government, the statement concluded.
