Tribute to the Spirit of Vinesh Phogat: Abhinav Bindra's Tribute
Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra paid tribute to wrestler Vinesh Phogat for her indomitable spirit. Phogat, who faced disqualification from an Olympic final, has been an emblem of resilience. Bindra praised her as a true warrior despite her heart-wrenching setback at the games.
India's first individual Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra on Thursday paid glowing tributes to wrestler Vinesh Phogat, saying her battle resonated with him deeply and she embodies the ''true spirit of a warrior.''
The 29-year-old Phogat, who made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final, faced a devastating blow when she was disqualified from the 50kg gold-medal bout for being 100gm overweight. The incident led her to announce a shocking retirement from the sport.
''Sports is often described as a celebration of human will. I have found this true many times throughout my career, but never has it resonated more than today. As I observe the national reaction, I see an entire country celebrating your unyielding resolve,'' Bindra posted on 'X', accompanied by pictures of his meeting with Phogat.
