In an emotional speech in Paris, Bach, 70, told IOC members that his tenure would conclude next year as planned. This ends speculation that he might remain in office if Olympic Charter rules were altered. An election to choose his successor will take place when the IOC meets next March in Greece.

Possible candidates include IOC executive board members Nicole Hoevertsz of Aruba, Juan Antonio Samaranch of Spain, Prince Feisal al Hussein of Jordan, and former Olympic swimmer Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe. Sebastian Coe, head of World Athletics, is also a potential contender, though his candidacy may be complicated by IOC age restrictions.
