Recovered Dresden Gems Back on Display After Notorious Heist

Nearly five years post heist, the Gruenes Gewoelbe museum in Dresden has reintroduced most of its stolen jewellery pieces, valued over 113 million euros, to the public. Despite recovery, pieces like the Dresden White Diamond epaulette remain missing. Five family members were convicted in this landmark case.

Nearly five years after a major heist, visitors at Dresden's Gruenes Gewoelbe museum can once again marvel at its precious jewellery collection. In November 2019, over 4,300 diamonds, worth an estimated 113 million euros, were stolen.

Though most of the jewels have been recovered, some, including the Dresden White Diamond epaulette, are still missing. The recovered pieces, deemed court property amid ongoing legal proceedings, are displayed in their original spots but bear visible damage.

Marion Ackermann, Dresden State Museums director, noted that some damages are barely noticeable without expert attention. The perpetrators, all from one family, were sentenced in May 2023. Saxony premier Michael Kretschmer emphasized lessons learned in security from the heist's aftermath.
