The West Bengal BJP unit on Thursday organized a march through the eastern fringes of Kolkata to protest the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.

The protest aimed at Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the state health department in Salt Lake, started from Hudco crossing in the afternoon.

'We want the truth to come out and we want justice. The state government and the state health department are trying to hide the truth. The state health department and R G Kar Hospital have tried to wipe out the evidence,' BJP leader Dilip Ghosh stated.

The streets were energized with chants of 'We want justice,' reflecting the collective anger and sorrow of women and other party activists who joined the march to demand accountability and an end to violence against women.

The rally directed towards Swasthya Bhawan was spearheaded by top state BJP leadership.

Police erected barricades near Indira Bhawan in Salt Lake to halt the protestors from reaching Swasthya Bhawan.

The young woman doctor was found dead on August 9, allegedly raped and murdered while on duty, resulting in the arrest of a civic volunteer by Kolkata police. The Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 13, and the CBI commenced its probe on August 14.
