Solingen Knife Attack: Suspect Surrenders Amid ISIS Claims

Early Sunday, German police announced that a 26-year-old man turned himself in, confessing to the deadly Solingen knife attack, which left three dead and eight wounded at a festival celebrating the city's 650th anniversary.

Düsseldorf police confirmed that the man claimed responsibility for the assault and noted he had previous arrests. Authorities are currently investigating his involvement in the crime.

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, although no evidence was provided. The group alleged the attacker targeted Christians to avenge Muslims in Palestine and elsewhere. The authenticity of this claim remains unverified. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy was detained on suspicion of knowledge about the attack but was not the assailant.

Authorities were alerted on Friday night to a knife assault in Solingen's central square during the city's “Festival of Diversity.” The three victims, two men aged 67 and 56 and a 56-year-old woman, were found with wounds suggesting the attacker aimed for their throats. The festival, crowded with attendees watching live performances, was immediately canceled after the incident.

Despite the loss of its territorial control in Iraq and Syria, ISIS continues to claim responsibility for attacks globally, including in Iran and Russia earlier this year.
