Maharashtra cabinet minister Deepak Kesarkar has suggested the erection of a new 100-foot statue of Shivaji Maharaj following the collapse of the original statue. The statue, located at Rajkot Fort in Malvan tehsil, was brought down by strong winds on Monday.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde disclosed that the statue was designed and constructed by the Indian Navy. Kesarkar, who represents the Sindhudurg district, stressed that an investigation would be conducted, but public sentiment would not be easily pacified.
Police have filed charges against the contractor and structural consultant involved. In response to criticism from the Opposition, Shinde has vowed to rebuild the statue.
