Marseille fans are furious following Pernod Ricard's announcement of a new commercial partnership with PSG, the city's soccer archrival. The deal is seen as a betrayal due to Pernod Ricard's deep-rooted origins in Marseille, famous for producing the anise-flavored liqueur pastis.
Fans quickly vented their anger on social media, spreading the hashtag #boycottPernodRicard. As resentment grew, some fans pledged to switch to alternative brands, calling for a boycott of Pernod Ricard's entire product range. Even Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan expressed his discontent, stating he would seek clarifications from the company's CEO, Alexandre Ricard.
Pernod Ricard has emphasized that the agreement, which starts this season and covers both PSG's men's and women's soccer teams as well as handball, was designed with a global rather than a French audience in mind. Nevertheless, the move has not shielded the company from intense local criticism.
