Karnataka marked the 'International Day of Democracy' on Sunday by forming a historic 2,500-km-long human chain to symbolize equality, unity, fraternity, and participative governance.

According to the Karnataka government, the massive human chain, potentially the 'world's longest', stretched across the state from Bidar to Chamarajanagar, encompassing all 31 districts.

The event, organized in association with civil society, saw the participation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, senior ministers, and officials. The CM led the main event held in front of Vidhana Soudha by reading the preamble of the Constitution. People from all walks of life, including transgenders and differently-abled individuals, joined hands to form the human chain.

In addition to the human chain, an estimated 10 lakh saplings were planted across the state. The participants, expected to total 25 lakh, were given certificates for their participation. A world record verifying team from London is scheduled to verify the scale of the event.

Karnataka celebrated the International Day of Democracy last year by organizing a reading of the Constitution's preamble.
