The bodies of eight fishermen were discovered in a trawler on Sunday, two days after it capsized in the Bay of Bengal, officials reported.

One fisherman is still unaccounted for following the incident. The trawler, named 'MV Baba Gobinda', encountered a storm 60 km off the coast on Friday evening, leading to its capsizing. While eight fishermen were rescued by nearby boats, nine remained missing.

In an extensive search and rescue effort, the capsized trawler was retrieved and taken to Luthian Island in Sagar area of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The bodies found on the trawler's deck and cabin were transported to Namkhana, and a search continues for the missing fisherman.

Senior officials, including Sunderbans Development Minister Bankim Chandra Hazra, local MP Bapi Haldar, and former minister Manturam Pakhira, were present as the bodies were identified and handed over to their families. 'TMC national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee has initiated financial compensation for the victims' next of kin,' Pakhira told PTI. The community is in mourning following the grim discovery.
