India Monitors China's Brahmaputra Super Dam Plans

India is closely watching China's hydropower ambitions on the Brahmaputra river, especially the construction of a massive 60,000 MW dam in Tibet. Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh assured the Rajya Sabha of protective measures and stressed continued diplomatic dialogue to ensure downstream interests are not compromised.

India is on high alert as China progresses with its colossal 60,000 MW dam project located on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, the upper course of the Brahmaputra. Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh highlighted in the Rajya Sabha that the government is diligently monitoring these developments to safeguard national interests.

The minister responded to queries about China's infrastructural activities, revealing the government's awareness and proactive steps in addressing potential ramifications. Singh emphasized ongoing communication with China via an expert-level mechanism and diplomatic routes since 2006.

Recognizing India as a significant user of these trans-border rivers, Singh assured that New Delhi's concerns have been consistently presented to Beijing. Studies on the Brahmaputra's major tributaries are underway to evaluate ecological and socio-economic impacts, ensuring that strategies are in place to mitigate any adverse effects from China's upstream activities.
