Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Prabhakar Karekar has passed away in Mumbai at age 80 after a brief illness, his family confirmed on Thursday. The maestro breathed his last at his residence in Shivaji Park on Wednesday night, leaving a void in the classical music fraternity.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant paid tribute, acknowledging Karekar's significant contributions to preserving and expanding classical music in the coastal state. Known for his soul-stirring renditions like "Bolava Vithal Pahava Vithal" and "Vakratund Mahakay", Karekar was also recognized as a gifted teacher.
A graded artist on All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, Karekar trained under esteemed gurus and was the recipient of honors such as the Tansen Samman and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards. His enduring musical legacy will continue through his disciples and admirers.
