Emperor Naruhito of Japan, who marked his 65th birthday on Sunday, emphasized the significance of conveying the tragic memories of World War II to the younger generations. The emperor has pledged to contribute to promoting historical understanding and peace as the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of the war's end.

In a pre-recorded news conference statement, Naruhito expressed the importance of passing down the tragic experiences and history of the war to those who did not live through it. As survivors grow older, firsthand stories become rare, underscoring the need for intergenerational dialogue.

Reflecting on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the emperor noted the survivors' concerns over nuclear disarmament. Together with Empress Masako, Naruhito is set to visit Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Okinawa this year to pay respects and honor the memory of those affected by the war.
