Karnataka's Clash: 'Thug Life' Sparks Language Debate

The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister urged Kannada activists to respect the Supreme Court's directive allowing the movie 'Thug Life' to be screened in the state, despite protests against Kamal Haasan's remarks on Kannada. The activists accused Haasan of insulting the language, leading to widespread demonstrations.

In a bid to defuse tensions, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar called on Kannada activists to adhere to the Supreme Court's order permitting the screening of 'Thug Life', a film starring Kamal Haasan. The film sparked outrage after Haasan's comments were perceived as an insult to the Kannada language.

Activists took to the streets, lodged police complaints, and issued warnings to theatres, arguing that Haasan had disrespected the Kannada language without acknowledging its rich heritage. The Supreme Court, however, reminded the state that vigilante actions could not dictate legal screenings.

Addressing the issue, Shivakumar emphasized the importance of respecting the judiciary while encouraging peace and dialogue. Highlighting Bengaluru's diverse, inclusive culture, he reassured citizens of the state's commitment to Kannada pride, urging them to both honor the court's decision and express their views lawfully.
