President Highlights 'Jeevan Dhan': Rethinking Our Relationship with Animals

President Droupadi Murmu has called for a transformative shift in how we perceive animals, urging a transition from viewing them as mere 'pashu' to recognizing them as 'jeevan dhan', or wealth of life. Speaking during the 11th convocation ceremony at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Murmu underscored the indispensable role animals play in our lives, emphasizing that life would be unimaginable without them.
In her address, Murmu highlighted India's rich cultural heritage, which sees divinity in all living creatures, and the urgent need to conserve biodiversity amid growing extinctions. She stressed the importance of using human intellect for the welfare of all beings and lauded efforts such as the banning of harmful veterinary drugs that threaten bird species like vultures.
The President also promoted the 'one health' concept, advocating for a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the environment. She called for innovative uses of technology in animal care and urged IVRI graduates to contribute to the economy by establishing animal science start-ups.
