Jharkhand Launches India's First Mining Tourism Initiative

Jharkhand, rich in mineral resources, has launched India's first mining tourism initiative in collaboration with Coal India arm CCL. The project, beginning with North Urimari open-cast coal mine, aims to transform mining heritage into a tourist experience, fostering education and attracting visitors to the region.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced the launch of India's first mining tourism initiative on Monday, marking a landmark moment for the state's tourism and mining sectors. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation (JTDC) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) to bring this initiative to life.

The project draws inspiration from ancient mining techniques observed at the Gava Museum of Mines in Barcelona. Jharkhand, a state abundant in mineral wealth, accounts for nearly 40% of India's total mineral deposits. The initiative seeks to convert this rich mining heritage into a captivating tourism experience.

Starting with the North Urimari open-cast coal mine in Ramgarh as a pilot project, the initiative will offer tours twice a week with plans for expansion based on customer feedback. Additional routes include visits to local attractions like the Chinnamastika temple, enriching the tourism offerings in the state.
