In a move to pay tribute to a legendary figure, Communist Party of India MP P Sandosh Kumar has called on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to name the forthcoming Bihta airport after Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, a venerated peasant leader and social reformer.
Kumar's appeal comes after a previous request to Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, who noted that airports are typically named after the cities they are located in unless an alternative name is proposed by the state government and accompanied by an assembly resolution approved by the Union Cabinet.
Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, referred to by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as the ''undisputed leader of the peasant movement in India,'' significantly influenced Bihar's modern history from his base in Bihta. Naming the airport after him is seen as a fitting homage to his legacy and a celebration of his fight for justice, equality, and agrarian empowerment.
