Tragedy struck the picturesque village of Dharali as a sudden deluge wreaked havoc, destroying more than half of the village and leaving 70 to 90 percent buried under rubble. The disaster, which occurred within seconds, left over 150 people missing, including locals, laborers, and tourists.
Witnesses described the horror as they watched helplessly from nearby Mukhba village, where mournful silence sits heavy among residents who knew many of the victims. Among the demolished structures was the 500-year-old Kalp Kedar temple and several under-construction hotels.
Authorities estimate the financial loss at Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore. The sudden flood, traveling at an estimated speed of 500 kmph, left no time for escape, sweeping away lives and livelihoods in its path.
