Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced on Thursday that efforts to replace all gates of the Tungabhadra reservoir have commenced. The project, slated for completion by June 2026, is designed to enable the reservoir to store water at its full capacity, benefiting farmers and addressing drinking water needs.
On social media platform X, Shivakumar reiterated the state's commitment to safeguarding water resources and supporting agricultural interests. He highlighted that a tender for the creation of 33 crest gates has been awarded to an Ahmedabad firm, with active fabrication in Gadag and Hosapete. Urgency in project completion has been emphasized.
Currently, Karnataka can store only 80 TMC of water due to safety recommendations. Consequently, water will not be released for a second crop to prioritize dam safety. The Deputy CM assured ongoing dialogues with agriculture stakeholders to navigate these constraints.
