A devastating fire broke out early Sunday in Kureepuzha, near Ashtamudi Lake, engulfing around 10 fishing boats moored in the area, according to police reports.
The fire, which was first noticed after midnight, rapidly spread through the row of boats. Swift action by residents and fire crews prevented any casualties, though the vessel count was estimated at ten by a police officer. Initial speculation suggests a gas cylinder explosion might have ignited the blaze.
Lok Sabha MP N K Premachandran has urged authorities for a thorough investigation, stressing the pattern of recurring incidents in the region, including a recent fire at Mukkad. Concerned about the fisheries community's safety and livelihood, he also called on the government to offer immediate financial support to the victims.
