Ponduru Khadi, the cherished hand-woven cotton fabric from Ponduru village in Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam district, has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, announced KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar on Friday.
The GI tag, registered in favor of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) by the Geographical Indications Registry, will not only elevate Ponduru Khadi's status on a national and international platform but also safeguard it from counterfeit items. This protection ensures consumers receive authentic products while artisans earn fair compensation for their craft.
Locally referred to as Patnulu, the fabric utilizes unique regional materials like Hill cotton, Punasa cotton, and Red cotton. Notably, the traditional craft employs the jawbone of the Valuga fish in its cotton cleaning process, a technique unparalleled worldwide. Kumar highlighted that the GI tag is a milestone for Khadi, acknowledging artisans' centuries-old skills under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
