On Monday, a dispute broke out between Jyotish Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati and the Magh Mela administration after police reportedly halted the seer from taking a sacred dip during the Mauni Amavasya bathing festival.
The incident led Swami Avimukteshwaranand to protest, abstaining from food and water, and demand an apology from the administration. Officials claimed safety concerns prompted their actions as supporters allegedly broke emergency-service barricades.
The district authority highlighted that the 2022 Magh Mela had similar legal issues concerning the Shankaracharya, which are still unresolved. Despite tensions, safety protocols were enforced, and officials denied any disrespect towards holy men.
