Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has expressed regret over her past friendship with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a revelation that has shaken the royal family. The U.S. Justice Department's document release detailing Epstein's global connections has included links to Mette-Marit, along with top Norwegian figures.
In an emotional interview with public broadcaster NRK, the crown princess admitted she was 'manipulated and deceived.' Despite past media revelations of their association, newly released documents disclosed a deeper relationship, prompting an unusual critique from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, who applauded Mette-Marit's clarification.
Facing personal hardships, including a chronic lung disease and her son's ongoing legal troubles, Mette-Marit's influence has waned. Support for the monarchy has suffered, with a February poll indicating a decline in approval ratings. Nonetheless, Crown Prince Haakon remains a steadfast supporter of his wife during this challenging period.
