Amazon has officially greenlighted the series 'Challenger,' featuring Kristen Stewart as the renowned astronaut and physicist, Sally Ride, Deadline reports. The limited series explores Ride's historic journey as the first U.S. woman to venture into space.

With a script penned by Maggie Cohn, who also takes on the role of executive producer and showrunner, 'Challenger' boasts a partnership of creative talent. James Hawes is set to direct, while the series is inspired by Meredith E. Bagby's book 'The New Guys.' The project originated at Kyra Sedgwick's Big Swing Productions and will be co-produced with Stewart's Nevermind label and Amblin Television.

Chronicling the landmark event of 1983, when Sally Ride broke through gender barriers in space, the series dives into the details of the catastrophic Challenger shuttle disaster of 1986. As the Rogers Commission probes NASA's operations following the tragedy, the narrative focuses on Ride's role and experiences in navigating the aftermath. The series also highlights the diversity and dynamics of NASA's Astronaut Class of '78.

Viewers can expect an intense exploration of these historic events through the eyes of Sally Ride and her cohorts, showcasing professional challenges and personal triumphs. Kyra Sedgwick expressed excitement about working with Amblin and Amazon MGM Studios to bring these layered stories to life.

The release date for 'Challenger' is yet to be announced, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating first glimpses of this compelling series.
