Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has reaffirmed the enduring relevance of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna's principles, emphasizing their importance as long as the rigid caste system persists.
Speaking at the Basava Jayanti programme, Siddaramaiah highlighted Basavanna's efforts against caste and Varna systems, advocating for a society marked by equality and humanity. The chief minister stressed the need for economic, social, and educational empowerment to effect change. He announced a Rs five crore grant for Basava Bhavan and initiatives to commemorate Basavanna's legacy.
Siddaramaiah also linked Basavanna's ideals with those of Buddha and Ambedkar, calling for a commitment to scientific and rational education that eradicates superstition. He announced that Basavanna’s photographs will be mandatory in government offices, further cementing his influence as a cultural leader.
