The government has appointed Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), a position he will hold for three years. This change follows the elevation of Prasoon Joshi, the former chairperson, to chairman of Prasar Bharati.
Vempati, an alumnus of IIT Bombay and co-founder of AI4India Org, possesses a wealth of experience in media, broadcasting, and public communication. His leadership is anticipated to enhance the effectiveness of the CBFC.
The CBFC, under India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, plays a crucial role in regulating film exhibition in the country. Its certification process is governed by the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and operates its headquarters in Mumbai with nine regional offices across India.
