Majestic Eagles: Celebrating America's 250th with Iconic Stamps

The US Postal Service is commemorating America's 250th birthday by releasing special edition stamps featuring the bald eagle, showcased in five major life stages. The stamps, unveiled at Minnesota's National Eagle Centre, highlight the bird's journey from fuzzy hatchling to the iconic national emblem known for its strength and independence.

Historian Steve Kochersperger emphasized the symbolism of these stages, relating them to the country's growth. The bald eagle, adopted as a national emblem in 1782, represents American values and has rebounded from near extinction due to successful conservation efforts following a 1972 DDT ban.

Artist David Sibley, creator of the stamp series, believes the collection will engage people in appreciating the natural world. Despite the challenge of depicting life-sized detail on stamps, Sibley focused on the eagle's striking head. Stamps traditionally enhance cultural knowledge, subtly rewarding observers with historical context and artistry.
