A native of Ngopa in modern-day Saitual district, Thangzama composed 44 songs and translated 17 works throughout his life, leaving an indelible mark on Mizo cultural and literary traditions. His career in civil service began with the Assam Civil Service before transitioning to the Mizoram Civil Service, from which he retired in 1994.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma described Thangzama's demise as a significant loss to the Mizo community. He remembered Thangzama's songs for their iconic and inspirational nature, promoting unity and identity among the Mizo people. In 2013, Thangzama was awarded the Mizo Academy Award for his outstanding contributions.
