In a strong appeal from Tamil Nadu, political leaders are calling for the return of the Anaimangalam Chora-era copper plates to the state for public display. These historical artifacts, dating back to the reign of Rajendra Chola I, were recently restituted by the Netherlands and presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The plates, which formalize the gifting of Anaimangalam village to a Buddhist vihara, highlight the multicultural character and trade prowess of medieval Tamil Nadu. Leaders like MDMK's Vaiko emphasize their significance beyond mere administrative records, underscoring the region's diverse cultural heritage.

Concerns have been raised that the plates might not go on public display. Advocates, including CPI(M) MP Su Venkatesan, argue for their return to Tamil Nadu, proposing their exhibition at the state's museums to reclaim and celebrate the region's rich history.
