The Election Commission of India (ECI) unveiled the schedule for critical Legislative Council elections in Maharashtra on Monday. The announcement covers a bye-election for Nagpur Local Authorities' Constituency and biennial elections for 16 other seats throughout the state. Voting is slated for June 18, with vote counting set for June 22. In light of this development, the Model Code of Conduct has been immediately activated in the specified constituencies.
A need for the bye-election in the Nagpur Local Authorities' Constituency arose following a vacancy created by Chandrashekhar Krishnaraoji Bawankule. Bawankule vacated his Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) position upon his election to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on November 23, 2024. The MLC seat for this constituency is set to retire on January 1, 2028.
In addition to the bye-election, the ECI disclosed the details of biennial elections to fill vacant positions across 16 Local Authorities' Constituencies. The elections had been delayed due to stringent constitutional requirements for local governance representation. According to ECI rules, 75% of local bodies must be operational and have enough electors for an election to proceed. Recently, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra confirmed the fulfillment of these conditions, paving the way for the electoral process.
The 16 identified constituencies include Solapur, Ahmednagar, Thane, Jalgaon, Sangli-cum-Satara, Nanded, Yavatmal, Pune, Bhandara-cum-Gondia, Raigad-cum-Ratnagiri-cum-Sindhudurg, Nashik, Wardha-cum-Chandrapur-cum-Gadchiroli, Amravati, Osmanabad-cum-Latur-cum-Beed, Parbhani-cum-Hingoli, and Aurangabad-cum-Jalna. The election notification will be issued on May 25, with nominations due by June 1. Scrutiny will occur on June 2, with candidates allowed to withdraw until June 4. Voting will happen on June 18 between 8 am and 4 pm, with the count on June 22. The full election process is anticipated to conclude by June 25.
