The Auction of a Masterpiece: Sue Tilley's Iconic Portrait

Lucian Freud's celebrated painting, "Sleeping by the Lion Carpet," which features the renowned figure of Sue Tilley, will be auctioned next month. This masterpiece, estimated to fetch close to $47 million, is part of a series of four portraits painted by Freud, regarded as some of his greatest works.

First owned by businessman Joe Lewis, the piece has been in his family's collection since 1996. For the first time, it will be available at Sotheby's auction. Tilley, depicted naked and reclining in an armchair, expressed her excitement during a Friday interview at Sotheby's in London.

This auction offers a rare chance for collectors to secure one of Freud’s finest creations. His revolutionary depictions of the human form have left a lasting impact on the art world, with another of Tilley's portraits previously breaking records at auction. Lucian Freud, who passed away in 2011, was renowned for his raw and intimate portraits.
