Man attempts self-immolation outside Hyderabad police station

A man poured petrol and allegedly attempted self-immolation outside a police station in Hyderabad on Monday. The man has been identified as a habitual offender and a complaint has been registered against him, the police said.

A man poured petrol and allegedly attempted self-immolation outside a police station in Hyderabad on Monday. The man has been identified as a habitual offender and a complaint has been registered against him, the police said. Speaking to ANI, Rudra Bhaskar, Inspector of Police, Chandrayangutta said, "Today we received one complaint of cell phone snatching from one P. Naresh Goud, stating that when complainant's brother Chandra Shekar after filling the petrol at a petrol bunk was attending a phone call standing away from the petrol pump. Meanwhile, one unknown person came from behind and snatched his cell phone, complainant's brother caught hold of the accused and brought him to Chandrayangutta Police Station. Later he was identified as habitual property offender Mohd. Shabbir (20) resident of Chandrayangutta. On physical verification, we found one cell phone, pocket knife and a small amount of ganja."

A cell phone which was found in the possession of the accused did not match the snatched cell phone. The suspect Shabbir allegedly created a nuisance in the police station by shouting. He was in an inebriated state and was sent to his house, Bhaskar informed. "After some time, Shabbir poured the petrol over his body, came outside the police station, and lit a fire. K N Prasad Varma, Additional Inspector and Crime Police Constable S Saikiran tried to rescue Shabbir. K N Prasad Varma Additional Inspector and Crime Police Constable received burn injuries during the rescue attempt. Shabbir was immediately shifted to the Osmania General Hospital with the police escort, He had 20 per cent- 30 per cent burns," said Bhaskar.

"A complaint has been registered against Shabbir. He also has a criminal history, he is involved in eight criminal cases of different police stations of Hyderabad Commissionerate," said Bhaskar. (ANI)
